In 1988, the 17 hectares of South Bank were the site of the World Expo. It has since been redeveloped to accommodate all the leisure, outdoor pursuits, and culture and recreation needs of the city. South Bank is where Brisbane meets to celebrate, as most of the festivals and events are concentrated in this massive tract of land along the River. South Bank is home to the Queensland Museum, free cinema, Performing Arts Centre, Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Theatre Company, Maritime Museum and Australia’s only beach in the middle of the city – a unique, man-made swimming beach with life guards on patrol.
